RelatedPosts Anichebe reveals club ambition Pickford pens new Everton contract Pickford signs new deal to stay at Everton Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald has begun the process of selling the club following fan protests against the owners, the League One (third tier) club said on Tuesday.Sunderland were relegated from the Premier League in the 2016-2017 season and immediately dropped to the third tier before being taken over by a consortium led by Donald in May 2018. However, following a goalless draw against Bolton Wanderers last month, supporter groups of the ninth-placed side issued a joint statement calling for the club to be sold immediately following a poor run of results. “Co-ordinated, ‘no turning back’ campaigns… against owners are highly unusual at any club particularly after 18 months. “Given these circumstances, and Donald’s sincere commitment on his arrival at Sunderland that ‘I won’t outstay my welcome’, the board feels that it has no option but to sell the club. “That process has now commenced. Owing to confidentiality agreements, there will be no further updates until a preferred bidder is identified,” Sunderland said in a statement. Donald, who met with Sunderland supporters in December and promised to invest in players in January, thanked fans and urged them to continue backing the team and manager Phil Parkinson. “We would also like to reassure those loyal fans that we are placing sufficient funds in the club to support the manager as he seeks to improve the first team in the next few weeks,” Donald said. Sunderland were beaten 2-1 by Charlton Athletic in the League One playoff final last season but have lost six and drawn eight of their 23 games in this campaign. “Whilst progress on the pitch has been slower than all associated with Sunderland would have liked, the club has become one of the very few in the EFL to be debt free and break even on an operational basis. “With that stable base… and with the team now back in contention for promotion, the board believes that Sunderland continues to head in the right direction,” the club statement added. Reeling after the All-Star Break, the Clippers need any advantage they can get, and thanks to Coach Tyronn Lue’s timing, a game in which the Clippers were not favored to win became a cakewalk, with the Clippers rolling the Cavaliers 108-78.“I’d like to thank Ty Lue,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “That was very nice of him tonight.”The Clippers snapped a three-game losing skid with the victory. Before Saturday, they had lost eight of their last 13 games.“We’ve been struggling to find a win here lately,” Chris Paul said. “So getting a win is always good.”One game after Rivers left Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan home from a loss at Denver, Griffin finished with 23 points, while Jordan added 13 points and 17 rebounds. LOS ANGELES >> When Blake Griffin arrived at Staples Center on Saturday afternoon, all of his focus was on the challenge of slowing LeBron James, switching onto Kyrie Irving and chasing Kevin Love out to the 3-point line. Then, about an hour before tipoff came the word that none of those guys would play. For the second time this season, Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue gave three of the NBA’s most marketable stars, defending champions, the night off for rest.“I like these types of games for a reason,” Griffin said. “It’s playing against the best, (which) is why everybody wants to play in the NBA that plays basketball. You miss out on playing against guys like that.”For the Clippers, however, there is a less pure reality. All numbers from Saturday’s win should be carefully considered against the circumstances. For example, the Clippers held Cleveland to 31 points in the first half, a season-low. At halftime, Cleveland was 0 for 13 from 3.But the number that needs no qualification is 41-29, the Clippers’ record after the win. The math of the Western Conference playoff picture has grown murky, but with the win the Clippers maintained a half-game edge on Oklahoma City (40-29) for the fifth seed in the Western Conference and moved within two games of fourth-place Utah (43-27).In the process, the Clippers became participants in a broader discussion about resting. For the second straight week, ABC’s Saturday night game was diluted by players resting. Last week, Golden State Warriors rested Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala.“I hate it for the fans,” Rivers said. “I really do. I hate it. I do it, we all do it. It’s bad and I did it the other night in Denver and there’s people with Blake and D.J. jerseys all over the place.”The Warriors at Spurs game, with the teams fighting for the top spot in the West “could have been just a fantastic game,” Rivers said. “But we all have to do our jobs and Ty did his job tonight.”When James came out of the Staples Center tunnel and took a seat on the Cavs bench early in the third quarter, he was showered with boos. Later, fans chanted, “We want LeBron!”Rivers said the league needs to move to ensure that when a team plays in a nationally televised game, it is not part of a back-to-back. The Cavaliers face the Lakers this evening.“We have to protect our product,” Rivers said. “I don’t have the solution. It’s hard, it’s impossible. … The look of back-to-back ABC national games (featuring teams resting stars players), it’s not good.” Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error
