Low milk prices sending some dairy farmers out of business

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Nervous about the dramatic drop in milk prices, Ohio’s dairy farmers are leaving the business at a higher than usual rate.Every year, some farmers retire and give up their dairy licenses, but there’s been an uptick recently. In March 2018, there were 2,253 licensed dairy farms in Ohio — a drop of 59 farms in five months.“Farmers are deciding they can no longer dig any deeper into their equity to pay for what I call ‘the privilege of milking cows,’ ” said Dianne Shoemaker, Ohio State University Extension field specialist in dairy production economics.Profits for milk are low because the price that dairy farmers get paid for their milk has dipped in recent years. In 2014, dairy farmers nationwide basked in high prices. Worldwide demand was high, and the number of cows producing milk was comparatively low. Since then, milk prices have been steadily sliding, as have dairy farmers’ profits.Milk prices in 2014 averaged $23.16 per 100 pounds. So far this year the average is $14.43, a 38% drop. The supply of milk is outstripping the demand, by far, which is driving down the price.“There’s just so much excess milk right now, and it looks like that’s going to continue to be the case for a while,” Shoemaker said.In Wayne County, the state’s top dairy county, Rory Lewandowski, the county’s OSU Extension educator, is increasingly hearing about farmers selling their farms or their cows. And others are seeking out bank loans to continue operating.“Nobody is doing really well in this situation,” Lewandowski said. “Definitely people are depressed.”Some of the dairies in Mercer County that recently closed did so because making more of a profit would have required them to expand, purchase new buildings and modernize their milking equipment. The investment was too great a risk given the low prices, said Dennis Riethman, an OSU Extension educator in Mercer County. About a half dozen farms in that county recently closed.“And I anticipate there will be more within the next year,” Riethman said. Some Ohio dairy farmers are having to seek out new markets because Dean Foods, the second largest dairy company in the United States, has announced that beginning May 31, it will cut its contracts with 100 independent conventional dairy farmers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. Also, milk cooperatives as well as independent milk processors have sent out letters in the past two years dropping some dairy farmers due to low demand and an oversupply of milk on the market, Shoemaker said. Previously, farmers typically were only dropped from cooperatives when they produced poor quality milk.Dairy farmers no longer receive a bump up in pay for producing more milk in the fall, when the demand is typically highest and production lowest, Shoemaker said.Once a farmer leaves the dairy business, it’s not necessarily easy to get back in when the price of milk improves, Shoemaker said. That’s because the farmer has spent years, even decades, developing a productive herd of cows and replacement heifers, so if they are sold off, it can take just as long to get started again, she said.Or if a farmer sells off the milking herd and keeps the replacement heifers, there’s no income.“And you’ve got all these mouths to feed. That’s not usually an attractive option,” Shoemaker said.Dairy farmers can consider other ventures to make money on the farm, but the switch typically is not easy. A farmer raising field crops for a living needs to plant 1,000 to 2,000 acres to earn enough to rely solely on that income, and with low prices for corn and soybeans, that’s especially tough. While organic milk and other products have gained in popularity in recent years and typically offer higher profits than traditional milk, the organic milk cooperatives that take on the independent milk suppliers have no openings right now, Shoemaker pointed out.Like the price of anything, what goes down must come back up — at some point. Demand for milk will increase. Or supply will decrease. Or a combination of the two.“But,” Shoemaker said, “we’ve been waiting three years for that to happen.”last_img read more

Salesforce.com Service Cloud 2: Customer Service for the Social Web

But according to the company its fastest growing product is Service Cloud, a kind of SaaS customer service software meant to replace the traditional call center. Salesforce.com has launched the second version of Service Cloud, which incorporates new capabilities for handling content as well as a close connection with the social networks. Service Cloud 2 has three core components: a knowledge base for publishing longer content, Salesforce Answers for crowdsourcing support questions, and Salesforce for Twitter. Knowledge as a Service?Salesforce.com is touting the first addition to Service Cloud as “knowledge as a service.” Despite the overblown branding, Salesforce Knowledge is a simple platform for managing content you want to provide to customers needing assistance. It will appear as part of Service Cloud in Q4. The content contained in the knowledge base can be distributed from within Service Cloud or added to your website. You can also send it directly to individual customers on a per-article basis, such as for info about specific products. Though they call them articles, the content can be structured in just about any way and can also include images and video. Salesforce AnswersSalesforce Answers is an enterprise version of the Yahoo! Answers or any of the many other outlets for gathering crowdsourced responses to specific questions. Service Cloud’s approach is to open customer service-related questions up. Questions can be published either to your own customer community or to your official fan page via a Facebook app. The responses are then collected and fed back into Service Cloud, along with the Facebook likes and other metadata. Salesforce Answers will not be available until early 2011. Salesforce for TwitterSalesforce.com first integrated Twitter into its CRM back in March, but now the free application on the AppExchange will now be available for including in Service Cloud. It allows you to do real-time tracking of Twitter conversations, as well as search and responding to tweets from within Service Cloud. And what about the notorious Twitter downtime? Salesforce.com representatives said they’ve been working directly with the Twitter product team on the integration. That might not be a conclusive answer to reliability problems, that level of communication is more than most developers accessing the API ever get, and it should seriously affect how smoothly the integration works. Use CasesMany enterprises are skeptical of relying on Facebook and Twitter for customer service, but Service Cloud is fairly broad software suite, not just a way to tie in with social networks. Salesforce.com said Service Cloud customers are interested in one of three general use cases:Companies looking to replace expensive call centers. These business might not care so much about the social media capabilities, they just want a more cost-effective solution and aren’t afraid of the cloud.Enterprises interested in diving into social media, but which want a more comprehensive platform than single purpose apps like CoTweet. The user experience of traditional business applications might drive you batty, but many see a CRM-like approach to Twitter as a better fit with enterprise requirements, as opposed to something resembling personal apps for social networking. Those looking to better integrate online customer service with their website. These are the enterprises who will use the knowledge base most effectively.Salesforce.com has been testing Service Cloud with big name customers like Dell, Comcast, and Starbucks thus far. In a briefing, the company claimed 8,000 customers were already using Service Cloud, and that it was growing much faster than any other product segment. last_img read more

Battling depression through films

first_imgPune: Satara-based Parivartan Trust, known for its work in the field of mental health, will contribute to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) global campaign against depression by releasing two Hindi short films on the theme on Friday, the World Health Day. The films, Mann ki Aankhe and Jagruti, are directed by Sumitra Bhave. They deal with depression, and the social stigma and the problems faced by people in coping with the disorder. The screening will be held at the National Film Archive of India (NFAI).Ms. Bhave, along with her co-director Sunil Sukhtankar, is known for her complex psychological study of human nature in films like Astu (2015), which dealt with Alzheimer’s disease, and Devrai (2004), which was about schizophrenia.Dr. Sudipto Chatterjee, psychiatrist, Parivartan Trust, said, “We hope these films encourage people afflicted by depression to discuss it with their families or ASHA workers. Putting the focus on depression catalyses public opinion and impels people to demand more from health services, which will take it out of the shadows.”The Parivartan Trust has been implementing the ‘Jan Man Swasthya Programme’ (JMSP) at six different sites across the country for the past three years. As part of the programme, the trust provides treatments for mental disorders at affordable prices. It has been particularly active in Pune and Satara districts.Activist Dr. Hamid Dabholkar of the Parivartan Trust, said, “In India, the recent National Mental Health Survey indicated that one in 20 people suffer from depression of sufficient severity to warrant immediate treatment. The most important objective of this programme is to enhance the recognition of this affliction and prioritise its treatment.”last_img read more

India to press for Dawood during Indo-Pak talks: SM Krishna

first_imgWith three days to go for the talks between the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan in Islamabad, external affairs minister S. M. Krishna said New Delhi would keep “pursuing” the extradition of fugitives taking refuge in Pakistan, including that of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.Krishna was talking to the media ahead of Nirupama Rao’s three-day visit to Pakistan, beginning on Thursday.Dawood is named the second-most dangerous fugitive on Interpol’s wanted list. There are unconfirmed media reports that Dawood may have fled Pakistan for security reasons following Osama bin Laden’s killing last month.Besides Dawood, India had handed over a list of fugitives to Pakistan at the home secretary- level talks on March 28-29. It features names of Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed and LeT commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.Others in the list are close associates of Dawood – Memon Ibrahim alias Tiger Memon, Shaikh Shakeel alias Chhota Shakeel, Memon Ayub Abdul Razak, Anis Ibrahim Kaskar Shaikh, Anwar Ahmed Haji Jamal and Mohammed Ahmed Dosa, all involved in the 1993 serial bombing in Mumbai. The names of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Sayeed Salauddin and JKLF founder Amanullah Khan also find mention. The names of Mumbai terror attack accused Sajid Majid, Major Sameer Ali, Sayed Abdul Rehman alias Pasha and Abu Hamza were included in the list of fugitives. Also figuring are other Indian citizens such as Khalistan terrorists Lakhbir Singh, Paramjit Singh Panjwar, Ranjit Singh and Wadhawa Singh. The names of Paramjit and Wadhawan though were surprisingly taken off from the Union home ministry blacklist last month.advertisementIt is clear from Krishna’s assertion that while certain confidence- building measures may be announced following the Rao- Salman Bashir talks, the issue of terror masterminds and terror infrastructure on Pakistani soil will be a key item.Krishna said India would raise the issue of LeT operative David Coleman Headley’s revelations about terror links of the ISI during the foreign secretary- level talks.”Whatever Headley has revealed under oath in a court of law in Chicago would be relevant for the government of India to take up with Pakistan and then try to get Pakistan’s response to that,” Krishna said.Headley, who has pleaded guilty to his role in 26/11, claimed that the ISI and the LeT had separately given him identical instructions to recce Mumbai locations. His testimonies in the Chicago court indict ISI for masterminding 26/ 11.Krishna also made his frustration clear about the pace of the trial in Pakistan against some of the masterminds of 26/ 11.” Our trial against sole surviving terrorist Ajmal Qasab has concluded and the appeal is pending before the Supreme Court. And virtually, their trial has not even started. It is a sad commentary on what is happening there ( Pakistan),” Krishna opined. For more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more
