They have young Daniel James as an ou-and-out winger on the one side and Pereira on the inside.”It’s something that you will do to try to get your numbers in midfield.”I just think, first half, we just didn’t connect the game well enough from behind, through the midfield. We were much better as the game wore on, but it’s something we can look at.”

Gini Wijnaldum warns Liverpool: We could fall away like Man Utd!by Paul Vegas7 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum says they will not under-estimate Manchester United at Old Trafford tomorrow.United have made their worst start to a Premier League campaign, but Wijnaldum says Liverpool still respect them.“The way we handle every match is to respect the opponent and give 100 per cent,” he said. “We try to do everything as good as possible, to work as hard as possible.“Every game in the Premier League is tough. Look at the results we have had. I can’t remember a game where it was easy. “We have won them all so far because we give everything and were totally concentrated. Also we have had a little bit of luck.”United’s decline is a shock to those fans who grew up during the trophy-laden years of Sir Alex Ferguson and Wijnaldum claims it could happen to any big club – even Liverpool.“It can happen to anyone,” he said. “It could happen to Liverpool, or Manchester United. It has happened to big clubs in Holland, but I don’t really think about it. I concentrate more on Liverpool.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

Twitter/@ClemsonTigersIndiana fans have already started a campaign to get ESPN’s College GameDay to come to their school for the Hoosiers’ game against Ohio State on October 3, but it may be a hard sell. There are a number of great games that day, including Alabama-Georgia in Athens, and Clemson-Notre Dame at Death Valley. The Tigers are jumping in the ring to try and win GameDay’s heart. They even put together a screenshot of a Match.com profile to show why Death Valley is the venue for GameDay in a few weeks.Hi @CollegeGameDay — we know you’re busy this Saturday but maybe we could get together next week? Dejan Lovren remains a useful option for Liverpool, says John Barnes, but it would be understandable if he wants to leave his “comfort zone” and make a move to AC Milan.A summer switch to Italy is being mooted for the Croatia international centre-half.The 29-year-old has spent five years at Anfield, taking in 170 appearances for the Reds. Lovren has, however, seen his position in Jurgen Klopp’s plans come under threat. The emergence of Joe Gomez and form of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip has seen him slip down the defensive pecking order.Barnes believes his experience could serve Liverpool well heading forward, but concedes that personal ambition may lead Lovren away from Merseyside. The Liverpool legend told The Sport Review: “With Joe Gomez coming back, if Lovren feels that he’s not going to be playing anymore and he wants to play first-team football, fine.“I quite like him at Liverpool because, of course, if players get injured, he can step in and do a good job.“But players sometimes think to themselves that they want to play first-team football so therefore if he leaves, I’ll have every respect for him, rather than him just staying at Liverpool in the comfort zone.“Maybe it is time for him to move on if that’s what he decides.”Serie A is considered to be the most likely destination for Lovren if he does move on this summer.AC Milan are in the process of piecing together another squad refresh, with their managerial reins having passed from Gennaro Gattuso to Marco Giampaolo. It remains to be seen whether Lovren remains a target for the new man at the helm. The Croatian is, however, considered by many to be disposable for Liverpool, with former Reds star Steve Nicol having previously told ESPN FC: “No [I would not keep him]. You have Gomez, you have Matip.“Lovren’s been a good servant to Liverpool.“Just because on occasions he’s made horrendous mistakes and we’ve picked him up on it, it doesn’t meant that I don’t like the guy.“The guy’s got a big heart and he’s given everything for Liverpool. He’s played well on occasions.” Subscribe to Goal’s Liverpool Correspondent Neil Jones’ weekly email bringing you the best Liverpool FC writing from around the web
Virgil van Dijk needs to spend another “10 years” at Liverpool before he can be considered a “Premier League great”, according to John Barnes. The Netherlands international completed a record-breaking £75 million ($91m) transfer to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018 and has since emerged as one of Jurgen Klopp’s most important players. The 28-year-old helped the Reds reach a Champions League final in his first few months on Merseyside, which they lost 3-1 against Real Madrid in Kiev. Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? Liverpool bounced back with a vengeance in the 2018-19 campaign, engaging in a thrilling Premier League title race with Manchester City while also plotting another run to the European Cup final.Klopp’s men narrowly missed out on domestic glory but picked up the Champions League trophy after a 2-0 win over English rivals Tottenham in the Madrid showpiece on June 1.Van Dijk’s presence at the back was crucial as Liverpool progressed to a new level, but Barnes has urged the centre-back to try and reach the same heights over the next decade.“If he gets transferred to Real Madrid next year, he’s not been here long enough to be a Premier League great, ” the ex-Reds midfielder told bonuscodebets.co.uk.”Don’t look down the line and say in 10 years I want to be a considered a great, he has to go through the process of being here for that period of time.”Too many people say they want to be a legend, but you can only be that at the end of your career when looking back.”You can’t look forward and want to be a legend, you look back and think ‘I was a legend’. I’m sure he doesn’t, but I’m talking about what people are talking about.”Barnes also insists that Van Dijk must prove himself all over again in the upcoming season, with Liverpool likely to resume a fight for more silverware on domestic and European fronts. He added: “Van Dijk had a fantastic season but it means nothing now. If he has a terrible season now, what is he? I’m sure he will be fine but he just needs to carry on and be consistent.”He doesn’t need to improve on anything, just consistency as he’s not been around long enough to judge that consistency. “How he can improve is to do the same again – because he has then improved his consistency, that’s the key to everything. He brings stability, he is calm, which helps the crowd and now he has to continue to perform.”Joel Matip and Joe Gomez shared centre-back duties alongside Van Dijk for the majority of last season, while Dejan Lovren is also still an option for Klopp after failing to secure a summer transfer.Barnes feels Gomez is the best choice to partner Van Dijk long-term, despite confessing that the England defender “still has a lot to learn”.“I think long-term Joe Gomez will be van Dijk’s partner,” said Barnes. “I think that’s a good partnership but he does have a lot to learn.”If you look at the centre back partners, we’ve got (Joel) Matip, we’ve got (Dejan) Lovren and we’ve got him (Gomez) alongside Van Dijk. (AP Photo)When Serena Williams saw a young U.S. tennis player distraught after a loss at a tournament earlier this season, she did what just felt right.Williams, 37, went over to console 17-year-old Amanda Anisimova, even if that sort of thing doesn’t usually happen on tour.”I really take to all the young girls out there that are doing well. I was heartbroken when she walked into that locker room, and I wanted to be there for her, because I have been there. And it’s an interesting position, because it’s just, like, no one ever says anything, even though I feel like a lot of people want to,” said Williams, who will meet Sofia Kenin, another up-and-coming American, in the French Open’s third round Saturday.”I’m just going to go for it now and do what my emotions want me to do and not do the ‘professional thing’ because maybe that’s not professional,” she continued. “I’ve just got to do what I feel and act how I feel.”Here is how Anisimova recalled the post-match encounter with Williams at the Miami Open: “It was a really long match and I was super upset in the locker room. Serena actually came up to me and we shared a little bit of a chat. That was really nice of her, and I’ll remember it forever.”Anisimova reached the third round in Paris for the first time with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 11 seed Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday. Graf retired in 1999 with 22 Grand Slam singles titles, then a record in the Open era; Williams eclipsed that total in 2017.”I remember thinking, ‘Thank God I had a chance just to play her, because I grew up watching her,” Williams said. Now Williams is the one facing opponents who grew up watching her.”I really love all the new young players. Like, it’s just so exciting. I feel like tennis has done so much for me,” Williams said, “and to see a new generation come through is great.”Kenin, a 20-year-old who is ranked 35th and based in Florida, is a big hitter who has yet to get to the fourth round at a major tournament in eight previous appearances. She has played only one match so far in Paris this week, because the woman she was supposed play in the second round, 22nd-seeded Bianca Andreescu of Canada, withdrew beforehand with an injured right shoulder.”I have been watching her. Ben Stokes is a freak: Joe Root after England stun Australia in 3rd Test at HeadingleyEngland captain Joe Root hailed Ben Stokes’s unebelievable knock on Sunday which saw the hosts beat Australia by 1 wicket in third Test of the Ashes series. graphs No data available! scorecard Reuters LeedsAugust 25, 2019UPDATED: August 25, 2019 22:31 IST Ben Stokes’s innings is being hailed as one of the greatest in Test history by the cricketing fraternity (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSEngland (67 & 362/9) beat Australia (179 & 246) by 1 wicket to level 5-match series 1-1Ben Stokes scored 135 not out in the 2nd innings and took 4 wickets in the matchStokes’s knock saw England register their highest-ever 2nd-innings total to win a TestAn extraordinary 135 not out from Ben Stokes earned England an exciting one-wicket victory in the third Ashes test on Sunday to level the series against Australia at 1-1, with the home side chasing down a record target of 359 in dramatic fashion.Starting the day looking to prevent Australia from retaining the Ashes, England were 286-9, still 73 runs short of their target. The tourists needed only the win to ensure a series defeat was impossible and the urn would stay in their possession. However, with one wicket left, England one-day World Cup hero Stokes knew everything depended on him and he smashed a remarkable eight sixes to all corners of the ground to get England within touching distance of their highest-ever second-innings total to win a test match.Nathan Lyon missed an easy run-out chance to dismiss England number 10 batsman Jack Leach and Stokes survived loud lbw shouts, with Australia unable to review, before, fittingly, Stokes hit the winning boundary to spark euphoria at Headingley.I’ve seen some remarkable cricket moments in my life but that is the best I’ve seen in over 50 years. @benstokes38 saved the Ashes and gave a magical inspirational innings. Even better than his World Cup performance.Well done @ECB_cricketGeoffrey Boycott (@GeoffreyBoycott) August 25, 2019″Ben Stokes is a freak, he’s incredible. The message at the start was to just keep believing. If we had two people out there still breathing then we have a chance.”After Stokes got to 60, 70 he looked like he wasn’t going to get out. To win a game on your own from there is just amazing. He does have recent experience of doing it. Just incredible to watch unfold,” England captain Joe Root said.advertisement”Witnessed some freakish things out there this summer, didn’t think it would be quite same again… Incredible atmosphere, just pleased to be standing here and enjoying the moment. That was just incredible, trying to sum it up in words is impossible. Outrageous. Not sure he can quite believe what he’s just done? @benstokes38 #Ashes pic.twitter.com/R5Yi1Oi4RiStuart Broad (@StuartBroad8) August 25, 2019″He’s (Stokes) got history and all that in the bank, but to stay as calm and composed in the moment as he did showed a great amount of courage and belief in his ability. Shows you should never give up. He was calm enough to take off his glasses and clean them between balls, he was a big part of that partnership. Did a fantastic job, still trying to get my head around it, to be honest.Arise, Sir Ben Stokes?SPOTY Ben Stokes?#Ashes pic.twitter.com/76aQluAc7EEngland Cricket (@englandcricket) August 25, 2019″When you’re on the right side of these results it carries a huge amount of weight, it can make a big difference. Hard work to do and things to improve on for us to win in that manner is fantastic. Ben deserves all the plaudits he is given,” Root said.Stokes himself said the win was yet to sink in for him and it seemed like he was pleasantly surprised with what he had just pulled off after the match got over.”I never gave up. When Jack Leach came in it was pretty clear what I had to do. I told him five and one, I’d take five balls and give him one.Nerve…Power…Determination…Responsibility…That was something else#Ashes pic.twitter.com/gW7DmFOxdBEngland Cricket (@englandcricket) August 25, 2019″Leachy is our super-nightwatchman so I backed him knowing what we had to do. I couldn’t watch at the end. I couldn’t watch the balls going down.”I just twanged my glute, was all right, just heavy legged. Adrenaline keeps you going, never until it’s over, that’s what I kept on thinking. The challenges you face at the highest level, there’s nothing better than being there at the end,” Stokes said after being adjudged man-of-the-match.Also Read | I never gave up: Ben Stokes on heroic 135 not out vs Australia in 3rd Ashes TestAlso Read | Ashes 2019, 3rd Test: Ben Stokes delivers miraculous win with unbeaten 135 as England keep series aliveAlso Read | Will name my 1st child after you: Fans react to Ben Stokes’s Ashes heroicsAlso Read | England vs Australia Ashes 2019 Highlights 3rd Test Day 4For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
